In honour of the overlapping of National Indigenous Peoples Day— recognizing and celebrating the history, heritage, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada, and the International Day of Yoga, why not show your support for a local Indigenous-owned business reaching for true societal change?

The Space, located in downtown Fort Saskatchewan at the Fort Station Mall (#307 10451-99 Ave), is a unique, 100% Indigenous-owned yoga studio and holistic wellness centre offering such additional alternative health services as meditation, reiki, breathwork, sound and colour therapy, psychic readings, and shamanic healings.

Its owner, Cynthia Walker, is a long-standing local business leader and Indigenous (Gwichyà Gwich’in) woman who also sits on the board of the Fort Saskatchewan Indigenous Society. She opened the doors in January with a mandate to make yoga practice affordable and accessible to all, despite age, gender, physical abilities or fitness levels.

“Regardless of your pronouns, culture, or size and shape, The Space will welcome you into our safe, inclusive community. Whether experiencing trauma, stress and anxiety, chronic pain, concerns with body image, or just looking for a comfortable, affordable place to work on your physical, mental, or emotional health without fear of judgement, we have the space for you.”

The Space boasts flexible schedules throughout the day in both hot and unheated rooms, and offers such classes as Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yin Yoga, Advanced Yoga, Pre and Post-Natal Yoga, Kids Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Fitness Yoga, Aromatherapy, Realignment Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Barre, and Pound. Your first class is always free for new members, and each week features a “karma” class in support of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank, which is free to attend with a healthy, non-perishable food donation.

For ease and convenience, The Space also offers a wide selection of branded merchandise and retail products and props, including yoga mats, towels and blankets, blocks, straps, meditation pillows, sound bowls, mala necklaces and bracelets, and various aromatherapy and hemp products for those in need of quality gear and equipment to support their health and wellness routine.

“Both the Indigenous and the yoga ways of life are centred around a deeper spiritual connection—to ourselves as well as to those who occupy the space around us. Despite how you see yourself fitting in—or not fitting in—to this world, come just as you are to The Space and you’ll quickly come to realize that you truly do belong here.”
